Rock of Ages CLEFT FOR ME
Catalogue Number: 049
Size: 8.5/8” x 20”
Location in House: Square hallway west wall
Repaired and reframed in 1900 with a newspaper backing from, “The Family Herald and Weekly star- Wednesday, February 14, 1900.” A wood and plaster bas-relief frame shows off a well and thoroughly stitched motto. Typeface is rendered in tight and tidy stitches while the hillside landscape is stitched free form. The tiny white flowers contrast with the bright red letters.
The motto has left a perfect sun pattern on the manila backing paper.
"Rock of Ages" was a popular Christian hymn written by Reverend Augustus Montague Toplady in 1763 and published in the British, evangelical publication, “The Gospel Magazine,” in 1775.
