Jane Webster hung this motto close but not next to, “This Canada of Ours.”
The motto could date from any time after March 29, 1867 when the British North American Act established the Dominion of Canada, uniting four colonies into one semi independent, commonwealth country within the British Empire.
The chorus of the 1880, “Dominion Hymn,” captures the sense of nationhood implicit in Canada’s vast terrain and its colonial relationship to Victorian era Britain, “O bless our wide dominion. True freedom’s fairest scene. Defend our people’s union, God save our Empire’s Queen!”
The motto’s decorative motifs include a crown symbolizing Britain’s monarchy rule over the Dominion.
Canada’s status as a dominion continued through to passage of the Canada Act that repatriated Canada's constitution in 1982.
