The reds and greens remain vivid indicating that the motto was protected from direct light. The gray wool of the capital H and J may once have been yellow and faded even though protected.
This motto quotes from a hymn written in 1774 by John Newton, an English sailor who later became an evangelical pastor. “How Sweet the Name of Jesus,” was published in a group of 348 works, called the Olney Hymns, named after the lace making area where they were written as teaching or inspirational tools. 281 of the Olney hymns were created by Newton and the remaining were written by his friend the poet William Cowper. By 1836, the Olney hymns had been published 37 times and disseminated throughout Britain and America.
